In the first five months of 2026, China's total construction machinery export value reached US$27.902 billion, up 20.8% year-on-year. Among all sub-segments, crawler cranes stood out as a major growth highlight, driven by exceptionally strong export performance.

According to data from the China Construction Machinery Industry Association, a total of 1,743 crawler cranes were sold in January–May, up 36.0% year-on-year. Of these, domestic sales accounted for 443 units (+10.2%), while exports reached 1,300 units (+47.7%).

On a monthly basis, the market has been in a steady high-growth channel since early 2025, recording 15 consecutive months of positive year-on-year growth. Entering 2026, despite a high base in the same period last year, the sector continues to expand steadily. In March, 402 units were sold; April saw 408 units – both setting new monthly records; and May recorded 351 units, down slightly month-on-month but still up 34.5% year-on-year.

According to the Association, domestic crawler crane sales in May reached 76 units (+35.7% YoY), while exports hit 275 units (+34.1% YoY). In terms of share, the explosive growth in exports is the key driver behind the sector's continued outperformance. Over the past two years, the export share has consistently remained above 60%, peaking at over 80% in February 2026, and has stayed above 70% in the past two months.

Customs Data – Strong Export Performance

Latest data from the General Administration of Customs show that in May 2026, China exported 558 crawler cranes, up 38.46% year-on-year, with a total value of US$139 million**, up 44.69% YoY. For **January–May**, cumulative exports reached **2,191 units**, valued at **US$470 million, representing year-on-year growth of 27.83% and 14.64%, respectively – sustaining the strong momentum seen since the start of the year. (Note: The Association and Customs data differ in statistical scope and methodology.)

Export Destinations – Broadening Global Reach

In January–May, crawler crane exports covered 120 countries and regions, reflecting continuously expanding market reach.

Top destinations by volume:

Vietnam – 317 units (ranked 1st)

Indonesia – 206 units (2nd)

UAE – 184 units (3rd)

Russia, Nigeria, and India each exceeded 100 units.

Year-on-year volume growth among the top 10 destinations (vs. Jan–May 2025):

Vietnam: +411%

Nigeria: >1,000%

Malaysia: +112%

Mexico: +883%

Only the UAE and India saw slight declines in volume compared to the same period last year.

Top destinations by export value (Jan–May):

India – over US$70 million (ranked 1st)

Second tier (US$20–40 million each): Indonesia, Vietnam, Nigeria, UAE, Russia, Singapore, Malaysia, Brazil

Third tier (over US$10 million each): Saudi Arabia, Australia, Germany, South Korea

Regional Market Highlights – Southeast Asia, Middle East, Africa, and Latin America Drive Growth

Southeast Asia

Vietnam led all destinations with 317 units and 411% growth, driven by rapid industrialization and intensive infrastructure and energy project rollouts.

Indonesia – new capital city construction has entered a peak period, coupled with large-scale mineral resource development, fueling sustained procurement of crawler cranes and other heavy equipment.

Malaysia (+112%) – benefiting from rising infrastructure and mining investment across the region.

Africa

The continent is experiencing one of the fastest urbanization processes globally, with the urbanization rate projected to reach 52% by 2030. Rapid urban population growth – particularly in Nigeria (Africa's largest economy), whose urban population is expected to exceed 90 million with an annual growth rate of 4.1% – is generating enormous demand for housing, public transport, and municipal infrastructure.

Latin America

Mexico stood out with an astonishing 883% year-on-year increase. In May 2026, construction machinery exports to Latin America grew by approximately 81% in value year-on-year, with markets in Colombia, Brazil, and Mexico continuing to show strong momentum.

Middle East

The region maintained high activity levels, with key projects such as ports and natural gas fields providing robust support for crawler crane exports. Although the UAE saw a volume decline, its export value remained among the top tier, reflecting higher unit values per machine.

India – From "Volume" to "Value"

Notably, while India experienced a decline in export volume, its export value topped the list at over US$70 million. This indicates a significant increase in the share of large-tonnage, high-value-added products, with average unit prices rising. Chinese companies are clearly transitioning in the Indian market – from pursuing volume to focusing on quality and value.

Outperforming Other Crane Categories

Comparing crawler cranes with other crane types in January–May:

Truck cranes: 10,451 units sold, +14.8% YoY (exports +10.1%)

Lorry-mounted cranes: 10,491 units, –1.91% YoY (exports +3.38%)

Tower cranes: 1,869 units, –19.9% YoY (exports –13.5%)

Crawler cranes led all categories with total sales growth of 36.0% and export growth of 47.7%.

Growth Drivers – Domestic & International Demand

Domestically, demand is primarily driven by large-scale infrastructure projects and wind power installation, supported by both new energy infrastructure and major engineering initiatives, sustaining robust demand for large-tonnage crawler cranes.

Internationally, surging global mining activity and an ongoing infrastructure boom are opening up vast market opportunities for crawler cranes.

Outlook

Driven by steady progress in large-scale domestic infrastructure and wind power projects, alongside global energy transition, mining prosperity, and infrastructure expansion in emerging markets, China's crawler crane exports remain highly resilient and are well-positioned to continue contributing incremental growth in the period ahead.
